Yentrang - cafe shop

10 Da Tuong. A bit of a disappointment, it looked nicer than it was. The coffe was ok. They didn't have internet. I can't really say what was wrong maybe it was us?
Coffe: 3 cups
Overall feeling: 3 cups

Milano Cafe

75a Tran ung Dao, Ha Hoi. A nice cafe hidden in an alley just 15 meters from Tran Hung Dao, we have lived less than 100 meters from it in a month and didn't see it until this week. They have internet and the coffe is made with the little "cup-brewers". Probably one of the strongest cups of coffe I´ve had in Hanoi this far! Sticky, strong and loads of caffeine, got to come back!
Coffe: 5 cups (it didn't have to be this strong but it's still good)
Overall feeling: 4 cups

Thu Ha cafe

Hang hanh 20 close to Hoan Kiem. Since our first trip to Hanoi this has been the best place to have coffee. Both the iced and the hot coffe gets five cups and it´s cheap! The fruit juices are also among the best and cheap! The only negative thing is that you have to sit on, or almost on, the sidewalk but it´s worth it. The traffic is not as bad on Hang Hanh as on other streets in the old quarter so if you can handle the street sellers it's quite nice.
Coffee: 5 cups
Overall: 3-4 cups (depending on the number of hat seller attacks)

Cafe Thu tam

Tran Hung Dao 76, 50 meters from our apartment. Easy to miss but good and cheap coffe. Both the iced and the hot coffe gets five cups. It seems to transform into a lunch restaurant around eleven a clock and then it´s crowded. At other times the customers seems to come from the big banks close by, at least judging from their suits. If they had an internet connection I could come here every day!

Coffe: 5 cups
Overall feeling: 3-4

Gloria Jean's Coffe

Cau Go street, in the same block as the Highlands coffe place we wrote about earlier. This is a Australian franchise that apparently has coffeshop's in loads of countries, this is the first one we've been to. This place is expensive, at least with hanoian standards. An singel espresso costs 42000d but it's also the best one we've had during our trip this far. It's served in papercups, that's not really what I expected after I've paid two lunches worth of dong. The stereo plays some fake classical music probably to give the place a feeling of luxury. It doesn't. They have big windows and doors that shuts out most of the street-sounds, nice staff and clean tables. It's smoke free and has internet! If they cut the prices and change the music I could come here again (Pia doesn't think the music is a big deal but agrees on the prices).
Coffe: 4 cups
Overall feeling: 3-4 cups

Highlands Coffe

Close Hoan Kiem in a high building with the name City view cafe written on it. Highlands coffe can be found allround Hanoi. Fancy place with a nice view over Hoan Kiem lake. It's expensive, Pia had a fruitjuice for 50000d. I had an iced coffe. It turned out to be more like coffeed ice. It was ok but had a strange taste of jasmine tea. I never felt that in coffe before and I'm not convinced that it should be there. So, not the best coffe but nice surroundings.
Coffe: 3 cups (it was not bad just strange)
Overall feeling: 4 cups

La Salsa

Nha Tho close to the st. Joseph cathedral. This place is a bit more expensive than the other places on Nha Tho that we've visited, a double espresso cost around 35.000 dong. It seems to be specialized in tapas and paella which should suggests a spanish owner. I ate an ok pasta dish here a few days ago, expensive but a nice break from the vietnamese food. They have internet, but when we were there they couldn't remember the password to their network. Fortunaly most neighboring cafes don't use passwords to their networks so we could login to one of theirs. Coffewise they don't seem to do any vietnamese style coffe but they have espresso and other european style coffees. Pia had a double espresso, her verdict was: a little like the coffe in our school cafeteria, two cups. My cappucino was ok, I've had better but also much worse, three cups.
Coffe: 2-3 cups
Overall feeling: 3 cups(Pia, she didn't like the open windows and the uncomfortable chairs), 4 cups (Esbjörn, nice interior and comfortable sofas)

Moca Cafe

Just opposite Paris Deli on Nha tho, close to st. Joseph cathedral. I like this place, it's airy and has big windows. They don't use the ordinary boring background music. Last time I was there they acctually played a whole album with James Brown! Moca cafe has internet and relatively good chairs and tables to work from. I have always had problems communicating at this place, but that might have more to do with me than the employees. Pia liked their ordinary western black coffe, I tought it was a little weak. Their Iced vietnamese coffe is also to weak for me but the hot variety was ok. You can get a nice plate of fresh fruit fairly cheap, a good thng when you are planning to stay for a couple of hours. So if you are standing on the middle of Nha tho and trying to decide if to go to the Paris Deli or Moca cafe, choose the latter.

Coffe: 4 cups (Pia on the western black coffe), 2 cups (Esbjörn on the iced vietnamese)
Overall feeling: 4 cups (it has a nice cheerfull felling to it, "man blir lite glad")

La Place

Opposite the st. Joseph cathedral on Au Trieu. Lonely Planet likes this place, I´m not convinced. It has a good internet connection and nice chairs and tables for working with your laptop but the coffe... It was the largest glass of coffe this far but it was mostly ice, water and sugar. It didn't taste bad, just not enough. The second time I vent there (for the internet not the coffe) I asked for the sugar on the side, but it didn't help that much. To much water and not enough coffe.

Coffe: 2 cups (it was a large glass, I sat sipping on it for almost an hour)
Overall feeling: 2-3 cups (internet and tables)

A five cup coffe!

Cafe Mozart

Just opposite the Nhac Vien, the academy of music. Our friend and teacher Tra My's favorit coffe place close to her job. We both had black hot coffe. It was served in the nice little cups with a bowl of water to keep the heat. The coffe was brewed at the table with the small metal brewers on top of the cups. The coffe was very strong, it tasted a little different from what we've got used to. Not bad but different. The cafe had a opening out towards the street, people was smoking inside and the room had a strange echo that made talking a bit difficult. but they had fresh flowers on the table and served free cold tea as a starter.

Coffe: 3-4 cups
Overall feeling: 1 cup (Pia), 2 cups (Esbjörn - If the guys at the other table had put out their cigarettes)

Paris Deli - Boulangerie et Cafe

Close to the st. Joseph cathedral on Nha tho. It looks like a nice "classy" place. But inside it´s quite dark and noisy. I hope the food and cakes are good because the coffe isn´t. Pia had a iced black coffe that had a very peculiar smell and tasted terrible. My double espresso had probably been a singel once, a little watery, but it smelled right.

Coffe: 2 cups (double espresso) and 0 cups (iced black coffe)
The overall feeling: 2 cups (it's inside and had internet)
